FAQ’S
1. What kinds of things should I write about?
You can write about your interests, hobbies, current events, pets or profession. It is important to be genuine and respectful. Just be yourself, be a friend. Encourage them to talk about themselves, their interests and dreams. Mail call is the highlight of the day for most prisoners and they will appreciate any contact from the outside.
2. What’s the difference between the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Members?
When signing up, they choose an option that works for them, including duration on the site and membership fees. Gold members are also featured on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
3. Do I have to give my home address?
No! You do not have to give your home address. However you do need to put a return address on the envelope or your pen pal won’t receive it. We suggest a post office box, a work address or your local church address.
4. How often are your ads updated?
We will try to update ads within 3 business days of receiving an application or an address change.
5. Can inmates receive gifts in jail?
No not usually. In your first letter you could ask your pen pal to send you a list of rules specific to their institution. For now just send a brief introductory letter. Don’t use gel pens, stickers, lip stick or spray perfume on the paper as those letters will not be given to the inmate.
6. Should I send my pen pal money on their birthday or at Christmas?
No you don’t have to because most inmates have their basic needs taken care of. However if you want them to have a treat or get a few small luxury supplies then that would be ok. We suggest $20-$50 maximum. Inmates should not be asking you for money and if they are then please use your discretion. Some inmates are very good con artists and will try to prey on the gullible so be careful and don’t get taken advantage of because you want to be nice. You can write a letter to the institution your pen pal is at for a list of items and prices on the canteen list so you have an idea of what things cost.
